Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, aka Black Coffee, was born in South Africa in 1976. He grew up in the South African village of Umlazi. After his parents divorced, he relocated to Cape Town. He was a quiet child. Music was the only medium through which he could freely express himself. With the encouragement of her teacher, she began singing in the school choir in 1994, when she was in high school. Since then, the Grammy-winning DJ and pianist has never left music. By fusing African percussion rhythms with organic electronic elements, he breathed new life into electronic music.

In interviews, he has stated that he began his career in 1994. He is currently regarded as one of the most influential house music artists of recent years, having blended electronic music with jazz, soul, and African rhythms.

Black Coffee took to the streets to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s release from prison at the age of 13. He was taken to the hospital after being hit by a taxi during the brawl that erupted during the celebrations. He survived, but his left arm became paralyzed. Since that day, Black Coffee has continued to live his life using only his right arm, and he has never let this situation get in the way of his musical dreams.

World Record of a Famous DJ

Black Coffee never sees the loss of function in its left arm as a hindrance; rather, it always devises new strategies to capitalize on the situation. In addition, at a concert in Cape Town in 2010, the Grammy-winning DJ played 60 hours of nonstop music. As a result, he holds the world record for “the longest DJ set performed with one arm.”

The Helpful Side of Black Coffee

Because of his charitable nature, Black Coffee established the “Black Coffee Foundation” in 2010. The dreams of physically disabled children and young people with an interest and talent in music but limited opportunities are realized in this institution. They are given both financial and moral support. Since 2014, the famous DJ has covered the education expenses of many children by supporting the “Bridges For Music Scholarship” scholarship fund at the SAE Music Institute in Cape Town, which has helped many physically disabled children with music production over the past 12 years.

Africa Rising CD-DVD

In 2005, Black Coffee founded Soulistic Music, a production company that began broadcasting tracks by many South African artists. One of the company’s most notable accomplishments is the release of the DVD Africa Rising, which brings together world-renowned African artists such as Bucie, Zakes Bantwini, Victor Ntoni, Black Moses, and Brothers of Peace for a visual and auditory feast. Africa Rising DVD, which has the feel of a live set with 24 tracks accompanied by a live orchestra, received a lot of positive feedback and quickly became a classic because it brought together many South African artists from various genres.

Future Plans for Black Coffee

Black Coffee, who has been interested in visual art since high school and has kept himself busy with animation drawings in his spare time, intends to launch a cartoon production company in the future. DJ received the most prestigious award this year after receiving 8 SAMA, 4 DJ AWARDS, 2 METRO FM AWARDS, and BET AWARDS in his musical career. In 2022, it received its first GRAMMY nomination for best electronic/dance album.
